Our Story

Karrie and Tim League have spent their lives building things that didn’t exist before. Not just businesses, but culture. As co-founders of Alamo Drafthouse, they redefined what going to the movies could look like. They created a space where film lovers could gather, think critically, laugh loudly, eat well, and feel at home. The Alamo became a hub not just for entertainment but for community, showing what happens when passion meets purpose.
Their vision has always extended beyond theaters.
When the opportunity came to reimagine the historic Baker School in Hyde Park, they embraced the chance to bring it back to life. Although they weren’t the highest bidders, they offered something more meaningful: a promise to protect, preserve, and reopen the beloved neighborhood landmark for the benefit of the community. As Karrie later shared, “We didn’t expect to get it.” But their sincerity and vision carried the project forward.
Today, Baker School is active again. Not with students and chalkboards, but with artists, nonprofit leaders, musicians, educators, and neighbors. It is a place where meetings happen alongside music rehearsals, where ideas are exchanged over coffee from Terrible Love, and where collaboration fills the halls.
Karrie and Tim did not just save a historic building. They continued the work they have always done: creating space for people to connect, create, and belong. Just as they transformed how we gather around film, they are now helping shape how we gather around purpose.
Their work at Baker School reflects the same values that have guided them for years: care for community, belief in bold ideas, and a commitment to making places that bring people together.
